Tax Filing Obligation

Do I need to file taxes while living overseas?

Yes, you may still have to pay federal and state taxes even if you live abroad. If you are a U.S. citizen or Green Card holder who makes above the general U.S. filing threshold, you are still required to file federal U.S. taxes and report your worldwide income every year regardless of where in the world you live.

Do I still need to file a state tax return?

You are required to file a state tax return if you are considered a resident of your home state. Please consult your Deloitte tax advisor to discuss your state residency status.

When is my tax deadline?

The due date for your U.S. federal tax return is April 15 in most years. However, the U.S. tax deadline for citizens living abroad is June 15. As such, you have an additional two months to file your tax return and pay any amount due without requesting an extension. Even if you are allowed an extension, you will have to pay interest on any tax not paid by the regular due date (April 15 in most years) of your return.
